London Colney Remembers, 100 years on
Almost 100 years to the day, London Colney Parish Council commemorated the war memorial’s 100th anniversary with a ceremony, tree planting and plaque unveiling. London Colney History Society had advised the parish council that the war memorial would be celebrating its 100th anniversary on 26 February 2020. The original order of service for the event, 100 years ago, was provided by a local resident, Mrs Sandra Hodgson and this was used as adapted for the service on Saturday 29 February.
Cllr Helen Pakenham, Vice Chairman of the Parish Council planted a commemorative tree and the Mayor of St Albans District Council, Cllr Janet Smith, unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion. The event was officiated by Rev. Patricia Jones from St Peter’s Church, London Colney. The service was attended by invited members of the History Society with local church and faith leaders.
After the service at the war memorial, attendees adjourned to St Peter’s Church, where the standard from the London Colney’s men’s branch of Royal British Legion was laid up.
Cllr Helen Pakenham said, “It was a great honour for me to pay tribute in my address, not only to the brave fallen of both wars but also the dutiful villagers of London Colney who ensured that a befitting monument is erected in their memory.”
